Exploration-driven seeds

Harvest wild plants to discover crop seeds, with biome affecting the varieties and starting quality you can find.

Specialized biomes reward targeted exploration with stronger starting seeds. Mixed or unknown areas can offer broader variety, usually at lower quality.

Crop quality from 0–100

Every seed and harvest carries quality that can improve yield, cooking value, and future farming potential.

Quality is shaped by biome affinity, season, nearby crops, fertilizer, bees, and harvesting choices. The goal is gradual mastery—not a single perfect layout.

Living growing conditions

Seasons, biomes, neighboring crops, fertilizer, and pollination turn farm placement into a strategic choice.

Planting in a crop's preferred biome and season gives it the best foundation. Crop combinations and surrounding conditions can then push the result further.

Purpose-built farming tools

The Hoe, Shovel, and Sickle each support a different part of planting, improving, and harvesting.

Use the Hoe to apply fertilizer, the Shovel to recover a seed while removing a crop, and the Sickle to gather produce without destroying the planted seed.

A working bee ecosystem

Raise worker bees around a queen to produce quality honey and improve nearby crop quality.

Begin with a queen and rare flowers. Worker production grows with a healthy colony, while overcrowding can trigger swarming and put the queen and hive at risk.

Quality-driven recipes

Planned cooking systems will turn high-quality ingredients and crop combinations into stronger meals and discoveries.

The long-term framework is designed for scalable recipes, quality-based effects, rare combinations, and hidden bonuses. Details may change as the public beta is refined.

Getting started

Whimsical Farming begins with exploration. Your first task is finding seeds—not building the perfect farm immediately.

01

Install and restart

Enable Whimsical Farming on your server or single-player session, then restart the world so its engrams and harvesting systems initialize.

02

Explore for seeds

Harvest wild plants in different biomes. Each region can influence which seeds appear and the quality they begin with.

03

Build a simple farm

Place the custom crop plot, plant a discovered seed, and use the Hoe to apply fertilizer from your inventory.

04

Read the conditions

Watch the crop's preferred biome, season, neighbors, and nearby bee activity. Change one factor at a time to learn what improves quality.

05

Choose how to harvest

Use the Sickle for repeat harvests without destroying the seed, or the Shovel when you want to recover the seed and replace the crop.

This is an early public beta. Development is currently focused on maintenance, bug fixes, balance, and player feedback before larger additions resume.

Whimsical Crop Plot

A custom crop plot that grows quality seeds, tracks environmental influences, and visually reflects crop development.

What to know
  • The plot uses a staged plant system and tracks environmental quality influences.
  • Visual crop fullness can change as quality improves.

Growing the farming ecosystem

Near-term work prioritizes reliability and feedback. Larger systems will return once the public beta is stable; plans remain intentionally flexible.

Phase 01

Public-beta maintenance

Bug fixes, balance adjustments, multiplayer testing, performance work, and improvements guided by player feedback.

02
Phase 02

Expanded crop varieties

More plants, biome specializations, crop synergies, and quality interactions built through the scalable data-table system.

03
Phase 03

Deeper beekeeping

A more grounded queen-capture loop, richer hive management, and additional colony interactions.

04
Phase 04

Bee smoker & tobacco

A planned smoker interaction using tobacco to make hive work safer and deepen the beekeeping loop.

05
Phase 05

Recipe crafting

Quality-aware cooking, discoverable combinations, scalable meal effects, and a dedicated crafting interface.

  • Released the first public beta created by Lordan_LaFleur and Cliffan for ASA Mod Jam 2026.
  • Added seven discoverable crops: Tomato, Mustard, Oregano, Parsley, Cabbage, Pepper, and Onion.
  • Added the 0–100 quality system influenced by biome, season, neighboring crops, fertilizer, bees, and harvesting method.
  • Added the Hoe, Shovel, and Sickle with distinct farming interactions.
  • Added Whimsical crop plots, Queen and Worker Bees, beehives, quality honey, and crop-pollination bonuses.
  • Established the data-driven foundation for future crops, recipes, bonuses, and farming expansions.

Configuration

No public INI keys are documented yet. This section is ready for server settings as they are exposed during the beta.

This mod does not currently require configuration settings.Additional documentation will be added when it is available.

Common questions

Quick answers for seed discovery, crop quality, harvesting tools, beekeeping, and public-beta expectations.

Where do I find seeds?+

Harvest wild plants while exploring. Different biomes influence which crop seeds appear and the quality they begin with.

Why is my crop quality low?+

Quality is intentionally progressive. Check the crop's biome and season, nearby crops, fertilizer, harvesting method, and bee activity, then improve one factor at a time.

Which tool should I use?+

Use the Hoe to apply fertilizer, the Sickle to harvest without destroying the seed, and the Shovel to remove a crop while recovering its seed.

How do I start a hive?+

Place a Queen Bee and Rare Flowers in the Whimsical Beehive. Worker Bees appear gradually and improve honey production and nearby crop quality as the colony grows.

Why did my hive swarm?+

A colony can become overcrowded. Excess workers eventually increase swarming risk and can harm the queen or hive, so monitor colony size rather than maximizing it indefinitely.

What should I expect during the public beta?+

The immediate focus is maintenance, bug fixing, balance, and feedback. Crop values and parts of the farming loop may change before larger additions arrive.

Found a farming bug or balance issue?

Share your map, biome, season, crop, seed quality, nearby plants, fertilizer, bee setup, and the steps that produced the issue. Screenshots are especially helpful during the public beta.
